Theater of Inner Conflict Resolution, Forgiveness & Enriched Learning

Many of the clients I have worked with are stuck because of some inner conflict they can’t resolve; many times they don’t know what it is that is preventing them from achieving their goal. I’ve learned that people get stuck when one part wants to do one thing and another part(s) wants to do something else. If they didn’t have this inner conflict they could resolve their issue on their own, without any outside help or intervention.

I wanted to focus on developing a new technique for this part of the Master NFNLP Certification Exam that would be useful for me. In going through the material in the Basic & Master NLP courses I thought it would be a really interesting effort for me to combine several of the various NLP techniques, language patterns, rapport building skills, magic words and embedded commands, etc. that we have studied, along with some hypnosis techniques I have learned, into an intervention I could use that would work to resolve inner conflicts.

In coming up with this technique I decided to use the NFNLP Basic & Masters Course material to build upon the core idea of a technique I have studied and become certified in called Advanced Parts Therapy, as developed by Dr. Jaime Feldman, DCH; my hypnosis teacher and mentor. Dr. Feldman’s technique is a structured approach to doing Parts Therapy and is different from the Parts Therapy techniques of Charles Tebbetts and Roy Hunter.

I enjoyed the effort of putting this intervention together. It was kind of like building something different by taking bits and pieces of various things and blending and combining them together into a whole. I hope you enjoy it also and I welcome your feedback.

I’ve set up the wording for the script for this technique to serve as a model that can be read verbatim or edited & adjusted to the practitioner’s style & time commitments.

I have been testing it out with clients, family and friends. I plan to continue to fine-tune it; making it simpler as well as putting in more of the magic words, language patterns, embedded commands, etc.

1. Modified Dave Elman Induction:

Make yourself comfortable. Place your hands on your lap, feet uncrossed and flat on the floor in front of you, eyes looking straight ahead. ....Good. Now, just begin to relax naturally and easily while taking two deep breaths, in through your nose (demonstrate) and out through your mouth (demonstrate), and again, in through your nose (demonstrate) and out through your mouth (demonstrate) and just let yourself begin to relax.

INTRODUCTION:
Now I wonder, if just for a moment, or maybe more, you will easily pick a spot on the wall in front of you, slightly above the level of your eyes, and see how natural and easy it is, and focus on your chosen spot, while you continue to relax now. And while you are relaxing more and more; focusing on your chosen spot, just look at the wall as though you are looking through the wall at a very safe and pleasant scene.... and perhaps you’ll just look at the scene in a vague and dreamy way. I wonder if you‘ll see it, hear it, feel it. Perhaps it will take on a color, shape, sound or feeling..... in a way that is appropriate for you. Just allow yourself to naturally and easily imagine it. . . . because you can, . . . with all of your senses.... in a vague and dreamy way.

You’re in control, so you can just pretend to visualize or imagine this very safe, very pleasant scene in a vague, dreamy, relaxing way. You can even see it, hear it, feel it, . . . . and it can be any place you choose.

Now take a long deep breath in through the nose . . . . . and hold it for a few seconds. . . . . That’s right. As you slowly exhale this breath through your mouth, . . . . . just allow your eyes to close now and naturally and easily let go of the surface tension in your body. You’re in control, so just let your body relax as much as possible, right now.

Now, place your awareness on your eye muscles and relax the muscles around your eyes to the point they just won’t work. Keep relaxing the muscles around your eyes to the point they just won’t work and when you’re sure they’re so deeply relaxed that as long as you hold on to this relaxation, you find they just won’t work, hold on to that relaxation and test them to make sure THEY WON’T WORK. And when you’re absolutely certain they JUST WON’T WORK, . . . . . nod your head.......Good.

Now, this relaxation you have in your eyes is the same quality of relaxation that I want you to have throughout your entire body. So, just let this quality of deep relaxation flow naturally and easily throughout your entire body from the top of your head, to the tips of your toes.

I wonder if you’ll notice, how easily you can just deepen this relaxation more and more. In a moment, I’m going to count from 1 to 3 and have you open and close your eyes three separate times.

The first time you open your eyes, everything will appear misty and your eyes will close. The more you try to open your eyes, the more deeply relaxed you will become. When you close your eyes, just let this feeling of deep relaxation become 10 times deeper than before. All you have to do is want it to happen and you can make it happen very naturally and easily.

The second time you open your eyes, you will find it much more difficult to open your eyes the second time. The more you try to open your eyes, the more deeply relaxed you will become. When you finally open your eyes the second time, everything will have a yellowish tinge around it, like an old photograph and your eyes will close. When you close your eyes, just let this feeling of relaxation become 10 times deeper than before. All you have to do is want it to happen and you can make it happen very naturally and easily.

The third time you open your eyes, you will find it extremely difficult to open your eyes the third time. The more you try to open your eyes, the more deeply relaxed you will become. When you are able to finally open your eyes the third time, everything will be crystal clear and your eyes will stay open and not close until I tell them to close. When I tell you to close your eyes, just let this feeling of relaxation become 10 times deeper than before. All you have to do is want it to happen and you can make it happen very naturally and easily.

In a moment, I’m going to have you open and close your eyes for the first time. Ok, now, take a deep breath and 1..2...3...open your eyes. . . (Snap fingers and say “Sleep”) . . . now close your eyes and feel that relaxation flowing through your entire body, taking you much deeper (anchor client going deeper as they exhale by touching on shoulder). Use your wonderful imagination and imagine your whole body covered in a warm blanket of deep relaxation. The deeper you go, the more calm and relaxed you become and the more calm and relaxed you become, the deeper you want to go.

In a moment, I’m going to have you open and close your eyes for the second time. Ok, now, take a deep breath and 1..2...3...open your eyes for the second time. . . (Snap fingers and say “Sleep”). . . now close your eyes and feel that relaxation flowing through your entire body, taking you much deeper (anchor client going deeper as they exhale by touching on shoulder). Use your wonderful imagination and imagine your whole body wrapped in a soothing blanket of even deeper relaxation. Let every muscle in your body become so deeply relaxed that as long as you hold on to this quality of relaxation, every muscle of your body will not work.

In a moment, I’m going to have you open and close your eyes for the third time. Ok, now, take a deep breath and 1..2...3...open your eyes for the third time. . . (Snap fingers and say “Sleep”) . . . now close your eyes and feel a wave of deeply, calming relaxation flowing through your entire body, from the top of your head to the very tips of your toes, taking you deeper, down deeper, way down deeper and relaxed (anchor client going deeper as they exhale by touching on shoulder). Use your wonderful imagination and imagine all the stress and tension draining out of your body, leaving you feeling very deeply calm and relaxed, perhaps more deeply calm and relaxed than you’ve felt in a long while.... Good.

In a moment, I’m going to lift your (right or left) hand by the wrist, just a few inches, and drop it. If you have followed my instructions up to this point, that hand will be so deeply relaxed it will be just as loose and limp as a wet dish cloth and will simply plop down. Now don’t try to help me, let me do all the work, you have to remove relaxation. Let me do all the lifting so that when I release it, it just plops down and you allow yourself to naturally and easily go much deeper than before; perhaps, even more deeply calm and relaxed than you’ve felt in a long while.... Good.

(If the subject helps to lift the hand say,) “No, no let me do all the lifting. Don’t help me. Let it be heavy. Don’t help me. You’ll feel it when you have it”.

Now that’s complete physical relaxation. I want you to know that there are two ways a person can relax. You can relax physically and you can relax mentally. You already proved that you can relax physically, now let me show you how to relax mentally.

In a moment, I’ll ask you to begin slowly counting the alphabet backwards, out loud, starting from the letter “Z”, . . . . backwards and I repeat; in a moment, I’ll ask you to begin slowly counting the alphabet backwards, out loud, starting from the letter “Z”, . . . backwards. Now, here’s the secret to mental relaxation. With each letter you say, double your mental relaxation. With each letter you say, your mind becomes twice as relaxed and the letters just drift and fade away. The more you try to hold onto the letters, the more you find they just drift and fade, further and further away, and the more deeply relaxed you become.

Now if you do this, by the time you reach the letter “X”, or as soon as you miss, skip or forget a letter, or maybe even sooner, your mind will have become so deeply relaxed, you will have actually relaxed all the rest of the letters that would have come after the one you miss, skip or forget, right out of your mind. There just won’t be any more letters and I wonder if you’ll notice how deeply relaxed you have become.

Now you have to do this. After all, you’re in control. I can’t do it for you. Those letters will drift and fade, further and further away, and leave completely if you will them away. Now start with the idea that you will make that happen and you can naturally and easily dispel them from your mind.

Practitioner: Now, say the first letter, Z, and double your mental relaxation as the letters drift and fade away. Client: “Z” - (Practitioner counts 1 as client says “Z”)

Practitioner: Now double that mental relaxation. Let those letters just drift and fade further and further away. Client: “Y” - (Practitioner counts 2 as client says “Y”)

. Practitioner: Double your mental relaxation. The letters are just disappearing away. Just will them away. Client: “X” - (Practitioner counts 3 as client says “X”)

Practitioner: Dispel them. Erase them. Let them go. Make it happen. You can do it. I can’t do it for you. Push them out. Make it happen!

(Pause 5 sec)

Are they all Gone? . . . . Nod you head when they are all gone! ...... Good. Now go Deeper. . . . Down Deeper. . . . Way Down Deeper. . . . and Relaxed. (Anchor with touch to shoulder.)

(Pause 5 sec)

(Note - If necessary, continue to deepen client using another deepening technique of your choice.)



Escalators Down to Deep Relaxation and Up to Personal Paradise Of Higher Awareness Just continue to relax deeply now, and visualize, imagine or pretend you are in front of a set of escalators; one going higher and one going lower. Just pretend, for a moment, that your body is going to travel safely and securely on the down escalator to deeper and deeper levels of wonderful, soothing relaxation; while your mind is going to travel safely and securely on the up escalator to greater and greater levels of awareness.

These escalators will take you to your personal paradise: the most peaceful, beautiful and special place in the world for you. It can be any place you choose.

In a moment, I will count from 10 down to 1. With each number I count, your body travels naturally & easily to deeper & deeper levels of wonderful, soothing relaxation while your mind travels naturally & easily to greater & greater levels of awareness.

It’s easy to take a deep breath now, so just allow yourself to relax naturally, and easily let go now.

10. Easily relaxing your body and letting go now.
Naturally relaxing your mind and letting go now.

9. Unlimited ability to relax deeply now.
Aware your mind is feeling increasingly alert and sensitive.

8. Realizing how easily and naturally you are moving down to deeper levels now.
Experiencing how easily and naturally you focus your attention and awareness now.

7. Expanding your relaxation, expanding your awareness, your insight sharpens.
Beyond feelings of deep physical relaxation, beyond feelings of deep mental relaxation.

6. Before you notice how gentle your breathing is; just let yourself go even deeper.
After all, it’s so easy to expand your awareness to even higher levels now.

5. Now you realize how easily and naturally you drift deeper and deeper, relaxed.
Because you realize how easily and naturally you expand awareness now.

4. As your breathing becomes slower and steadier; as your body relaxes completely.
And as your body relaxes completely; and your awareness grows stronger.

3. The more calm and relaxed you become, the more easily your body lets go.
The more easily your body lets, the more easily your mind expands.

2. I’m curious if you’ll notice how gentle your breathing is, as your body relaxes more and more.
I wonder if you’ll notice how sensitive your awareness is, as your mind expands more and more.

1. Because you are now deeply and completely relaxed.
Aware you are now entering higher levels of awareness.

Enter Theater of Inner Conflict Resolution, Forgiveness & New Learning
As you step off the escalators you enter your personal paradise; the most peaceful, beautiful and special place in the world for you. Take a deep breath and just visualize, imagine or pretend you are gently floating on a soft cloud to the center of your personal paradise; a place where you are totally safe and protected from all the stresses, tensions, and worries of everyday life.

Now imagine standing in this safe and protected special place and facing in the direction of the sunrise. Imagine watching the sun as it gently rises above the horizon, filling your personal paradise with a brilliantly glowing golden warmth. It’s easy to let yourself see it, hear it and feel it.

As you are standing watching the sun as it continues to rise above the horizon, make a 90 degree turn to your right, and as you complete your turn you will find yourself facing a beautiful, special theater building directly in front of you. Maybe you’ll just associate a color, sound, shape or feeling with it.

See yourself walking towards this special theater, entering it and walking down the main aisle and taking your seat in the center of this theater created especially for you. As the curtains draw back you see a large movie screen filling the center area of the stage.

Visualize Time Line of Your Life on Theater Movie Screen
Looking towards the movie screen you see the time line of your life; your past, your present and your future begin to appear, take form and light up towards the top of the screen; perhaps taking on a color, sound, shape or feeling, in a manner appropriate for you. See it, hear it, feel it. Notice where you experience it in your mind, your body, your feelings. Just allow it to move slightly into the background for now.

Begin Calling out the Parts
I wonder if you realize that everyone is made up of parts. There is a happy part, a sad part, a fun part, a curious part, a critical part, a thoughtful part, a loving part and many other parts.

Calling out the Positive Part - (Super Ego)
In a moment, I am going to address the positive part of you. The part that is always there working to keep you happy, healthy, safe and secure; the moral and ethical part making the correct decisions, always doing the right thing. It is the part that brought you here today!

I am going to count from 1 to 3 and respectfully ask the positive part of you, the part that is protecting you, to come out on the left hand side of the stage, and say “I Am Here”....1-2-3 (Snap) . . . . . (Wait for Response)

You will be calm and relaxed, protected in the projection booth behind a shield of Plexiglas. If I see that you are experiencing any stress or anxiety, I will touch you on the shoulder like this (anchor client on shoulder) and you will easily and naturally go deeper and become calmer and more relaxed than any stress or tension present.

(1. If no answer have them go down on an elevator ,escalator, stair, cloud etc. , whatever is appropriate for client! As you count down from 20 to 1 describe the journey down in detail & tell client that when you reach “1” they will be at the origin of the problem (ISE).)

(2. Avoid analyzing or asking many questions. It is not necessary to know what is going on. The client knows and may not want to reveal it. Your job is to get the client to the root cause of the behavior, (ISE). Once the client is there, they will see it and understand it in a way appropriate for them and they will know what they need to do to resolve it. Analyzing or asking too many questions runs the risk of creating an abreaction, or injecting your values and opinions into the client’s experience.)

Sometimes, as we are growing up, we mislearn things or misunderstand events & situations, or what parents and other authority figures say to us. Maybe what was said was not what was meant. Sometimes we get blocked or stuck by these mislearnings or misunderstandings; by events & situations that worked out other than we desired.

Now I want you (Renamed sub-part) to go to the little/younger (Client’s first name) and place your arms around little (Client’s first name) and hug the younger (Client’s first name).

(Have client hug self as a self-anchor by crossing their arms/placing their hands on their shoulders. You then anchor client by touching their left hand as it rests on their right shoulder, so that you can instantly apply pressure to their shoulder to take them deeper to their safe place if they begin to indicate any abreaction. Remember you told client you will be with them on this journey and will touch them on the shoulder to relax them deeper than any stress, tension, anxiety or fear that may come up!)

(I want you to just pretend to forgive. Just easily and naturally pretend to forgive, Now! And in doing so all those things that were blocked are no longer blocked!) (Note! - Whether real or imagined, by getting client to pretend to forgive, the subconscious will act to forgive.)

You are safe now. All those things that were blocked are no longer blocked. You no longer have those feelings of insecurity, fear, anger, hurt or pain. Imagine yourself now standing in a field in your personal paradise, facing the sun. Behind you is a large parachute, filling with the wind, attached to your waist by a harness with two silvery clips. Watch the parachute moving in the sky behind you. See all the hurt, fear, pain, anger, suffering, stress, anxiety and loneliness flowing into the parachute. Hear the wind rushing by your ears as it fills the parachute with the things that blocked you, caused you to be stuck in the past. Feel the pull of the parachute from behind as it fills with the color, shape, sound and feelings of all that blocked you, kept you stuck in the past. Experience the residue of anything remaining that is still bothering you, the feelings of anything that remains unfinished regarding (State Client’s Problem) draining out of you and flowing into the parachute. . . . .Good!

Now, take a deep breath, reach down naturally and easily and (Snap your fingers) release the silvery clips. See the parachute hurtling backwards from you in the wind, growing smaller and smaller and diminishing as it moves further and further away. Hear the sound of the wind roaring past your ears as it drives the parachute further and further away behind you. Feel the release of the weight of all that blocked you, kept you stuck in the past as the parachute hurtles further and further away, growing smaller and smaller. Experience the residue of anything remaining that is still bothering you, the feelings of anything that remains unfinished regarding (State Client’s Problem) completely draining out of you as the parachute diminishes in the distance, more and more with each moment.

Notice your entire body filling with powerful, positive energy; pushing and compelling you forward to your (State Client’s Goal) as the parachute completely disappears over the horizon behind you, . . . It’s Gone! . . . taking with it all that once held you back . . . . . and you know you are now free from what once held you back!

Notice the marker point on your time line for (State Client’s Problem) growing dim and fading away as any last bit of anything, everything related to this issue, any last bit of residue regarding this issue naturally and easily drains and fades away to nothing.

In a moment, I am going to count up slowly from 1 to 5 and on the count of 5, just easily open your eyes and come on back. Just allow yourself to travel on the escalators back to now; just easily and naturally bring your body, mind and feelings back to now. Allow yourself to easily and naturally experience your new learning, success and positive changes now; because they are a positive, permanent part of you now.

So take a nice relaxing breath now while I count up slowly from 1 to 5 and on the count of 5, just easily open your eyes and come on back.
