Goal: This technique is intended for anyone ready to move beyond a limiting belief to a new, moreresourceful belief. It can also be used by those wanting to channel the power of a resourceful core belief to aid in moving beyond a limiting belief, or achieving a goal. It can be particularly useful for individuals who are challenged by techniques involving "imagine seeing yourself" Those clients may include persons with poor self-esteem and self-image, or those who through trauma have developed the ability to completely dissociate from self.

  • Elicit the desired state, stated in positive terms.
  • Elicit the current state, or core belief (this can be a resourceful, or unresourceful belief).
  • “Imagine, picture, or think about a tree, A big, sturdy, strong tree. It might be an oak or a maple, or any strong, stable tree of your choice.”
  • “Imagine the roots of that tree. They burrow deep into the earth, not only stabilizing the tree, but more importantly allowing the tree to draw up nourishment from the earth.”
  • “Now imagine the branches of the tree. Notice how the branches and leaves reach upward and outward, not just balancing the root system, but taking in the nourishment from the sunlight above.”
  • “Imagine what’s happening inside the trunk of the tree. How it pulls up the nourishment and energy from the roots, and pulls down the nourishment and energy from the branches and leaves; and somehow, it miraculously combines the two resulting in new growth.”
  • “Now just imagine stepping into the tree. Allow yourself to take on the characteristics of the tree. Notice how stable you feel as a part of the solid, lasting trunk of the tree. Perhaps you can feel the cool earth beneath you, and the warmth of the sun in the sky above.”
  • “You can become aware of your roots. This is that deep inner part of you where your core beliefs reside. These beliefs are rooted in the deepest part of what makes you a unique individual. Some of these roots we developed on our own, and were some developed under the influence of others. Become aware, now, that each of your core beliefs originally developed with concern for your highest good. As these beliefs developed, a tremendous internal energy was tapped. Notice that however this energy eventually developed, originally it was a positive energy.”
  • “Now just let your awareness drift upward to your branches. Notice how they stretch upward toward your unlimited potential. Reaching into the future and to all the beneficial possibilities open to you, where your highest good is always the result.”
  • “Call to mind the [current state resourceful or unresourceful. Notice how you can become aware, on some level of consciousness, of the original, positive energy that created this belief and allowed your roots to grow.” “Become aware of [desired state]. As something that you are reaching for, notice how your branches are reaching toward it and drawing in the energy for making it real.”
  • “Within the trunk of the tree, within you, the original positive intent of the energy in your roots, your core beliefs, flows upward. At the same time, the energy you are drawing in from your goal, flows downward through your branches. Amazingly, these two energies combine easily and effortlessly. As they do you feel a surge of power through your entire body, as the positive energy of your core beliefs allows your goal to become reality. Simultaneously the energy drawn from your goal penetrates down into your roots, your core beliefs, reinforcing the resourceful and strengthening the positive, original intent of all others. Like a real tree, you find that the use of these combined energies offers opportunity for growth.”
  • “Take a moment and allow your preconscious mind to remap your awareness. You may notice some of the changes instantly. Others may take time to notice, if you even consciously notice them at all.” [Pause]
  • “Know that from this day forward, whenever you see a tree, or any green growing thing, all of these changes, these shifts will reinforce, growing stronger becoming a permanent part of your reality.”
  • “Allow yourself to return to your normal state of awareness, knowing that changes have taken place and will continue to take place.”
  • Perform state check.
