This works well on a traffic stop when looking for contraband. As you pull over the target for speeding. The target is usually nervous. You don’t tell the suspect you’re giving them a warning. You walk back to your vehicle and write up the warning {taking your time as you write} which stress of the unknown. You go back to the target vehicle advising the suspect you are giving them a warning for speeding {while your telling them this your smiling as if your at the end of your shift and you want to go home. As you do, you notice the target is relieved that they are not getting a ticket then you asked the target the question. “You don’t have any dead bodies, machine guns or contraband as you shake your head side to side as if you’re saying NO. The target usually estimated 90% of the time the target would shake their head no also. You state, “you don’t care if I give a quick look do you as you shake your head up and down as if your saying YES. Again usually over 90% of the time the person will laugh as they are shaking their head YES stating I don’t have any dead bodies in the vehicle agreeing with the search.
Now if you want to take it the next step you can state my Sgt will be upset if he observes you outside the vehicle while I search because you {target} may get hurt as a car passing by may hit you. The person agrees to be placed in the rear of your cruiser after you search them. Now you can search the vehicle and if you find contraband the target is already in the rear of your cruiser. If you using this method use a recorder so the verbally consent is taped. Now if you are using consent to search form. Again as your reading the form to them as you turn the form so they can see the form and you are standing on their right side. When you are reading and you get to the area of the form were the target needs to sign the form, you accidentally drop the writing pen towards your target's hand. You should have already noticed whether they are left or right handed as to which hand to drop the pen towards. Most of the time the target will unconsciously pick the pen up and once the pen is their hand they will sign the consent form. Notice the language is very eastern Kentuckian as the target may think you’re under educated and therefore harmless.
