Aryn stated that she had this presenting problem between the ages of 7-10. If she saw or heard any signs of a tornado she would go down to the basement of the house because she was so frightened.

Another situation arose last year because of several tornado warnings. She was at a girlfriend’s house and as she entered the house, the girlfriend told her of an impending tornado. Aryn quickly phoned her family, then her co-workers warning them of the tornado. She wanted her friends & family to be safe. Then everyone started watching the weather channel and Aryn would look out the window to see if the trees were moving.

Aryn described tightness in her chest which was a brownish color when she thought about a tornado and watched the weather channel. If there was a mention of high winds she would get extremely nervous. In her dreams the tornadoes are even bigger and she can actually see the funnel coming. Also, if hail is announced, she looks for a sign of a bad storm for example, looking outside to see if the trees are moving from side to side.

We had her find a safe place, did the Dave Elman Induction, followed by an anti-anxiety script used for new clients and then proceeded with the Fast Phobia Technique.

We started working on the first situation when she was about 10 and did the session 3 times and she felt comfortable, so we proceeded to the 2nd situation at the girlfriend’s house. First I had her change the brownish color to a pink color and make the area of her chest smaller and smaller and after that we proceeded with the Fast Phobia Technique. We did this 3 times and she tried to visualize the tornado and she told me it did not bother her anymore, so I anchored her on her wrist and told her the phobia was gone and now she could enjoy her weekend of camping in about two weeks.

Her responses were as follows. She felt time distortion as the session was two hours but she thought she had been here only one hour. Her body was very relaxed and she felt detached like “a cartoon on T.V where the spirit lifts you out of your body”. She imaged she had an itch but when she wanted to scatch it she forgot all about it. She saw Port Elgin and also Campbelford where they are going camping. She saw the tarp above the tent which was bright blue and a couple of friends roasting marshmallows. She could definitely see herself happy because she loves camping.

She feels comfortable but needs to be in a similar situation to see how she will behave. I also told her during hypnosis that she had the “plexiglas” to protect her whenever she needed it. I also anchored that safe feeling on her elbow.
